Graphic Design, Politics, and Branding – A response

1. Why do you think the reproduction of image is so prevalent in the world today?

Images are prevalent because we see them everywhere! Companies know the power of the image, so they can create logos or slogans to really catch the persons eye. Good Graphic design is made so you can communicate without having to read. It is so easy to photograph an  image, and instagram makes it prevalent as you can easily post your selfie’s or offer a window into a persons life. Most people want to know what others are doing with social media, and it makes it easy. Hillary went the extra mile by having her campaign design a custom logo, but also a custom typeface!

2. What do you think this prevalence bodes for the future of graphic design and your place in it?

I think it is going to have a bright future, as people (especially younger people) appreciate good design. Images can be very powerful if used right! Like I said before, the future might as well be a more image and type based society where if you don’t need to read much to communicate, it should look good as well. That should be the mindset and trends also come and go. Also, the younger generation seem more computer savvy and they can pick up programs like the Adobe CC, and there are people who are not art/graphic design majors, but they know Adobe CC. So it seems like it is everywhere. We have to draw the line from those who know the Adobe CC and real artists. I think we should give all artists and their mediums a chance. Real art is not going away, but art is probably going to be more performance/temporary or move towards computer based design. I do think Graphic design will eventually be considered fine art and be shown in fine art museums (if it has not already been).

3. Why do you think the John McCain drive for the presidency failed to use the Internet (or failed to use it effectively) as a means of communicating with voters?

McCain was targeting the older voters who really were not into social media. Twitter and Facebook were not as popular as they were today. Younger voters are the kind that are more in tune with social media and are constantly looking out for new trends. If you want to succeed, then use Social media to your advantage.Nowadays, Trump and Hillary are using social media to their full advantage.

4. How do the current crop of presidential hopefuls use Internet media to promote their campaigns?

Infact, Donald Trump did a AMA on the_Donald subreddit! Politicians are following the internet for various trends and there are those who like to investigate them. Infact, Donald Trump is a very active tweeter who likes to tweet his mind. People are taking trends and letting them go “viral.” We also have more social media sites and networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Reddit (where people can take ideas from other sites and comment on them.) People want their voices heard.

Just some thoughts on Applebeam’s (Prof. James Miller’s article “Graphic Design, Politics, and Branding.”). I really enjoyed the article, and it had some good insights into the graphic design and world of pop culture!
